UK Airport Drop-Off Charges 2026
The RAC’s July 2026 comparison found the average nearest-terminal drop-off fee had risen by a third to £7. Compare the 20 busiest UK airports, find the free alternative and avoid the payment traps that can turn a short stop into a £100 notice.
Sixteen of the UK’s 20 busiest airports increased or introduced their nearest-terminal drop-off fee in the year to July 2026, according to new RAC analysis. The average charge rose by £1.70 to £7, roughly one third higher than last summer. Best Parking Choice by Situation
Use the terminal forecourt
Choose the paid terminal drop-off only when the passenger can step out immediately. Heathrow, Manchester and East Midlands can make sense for a fast unload, but Gatwick and Stansted become poor value if the stop drifts.
Use the free area
Choose Long Stay, Mid Stay, Park & Ride, JetParks or a Waiting Zone when time is less tight. The trade-off is a shuttle or walk, but it avoids paying a terminal premium.
Use short-stay parking
Use short-stay parking when you need to help at check-in, wait for an arrival, manage family luggage, or support a passenger with assistance needs. Drop-off lanes are not built for waiting.

How to Avoid Airport Drop-Off Charges
Use the free area when time is not tight
Most larger airports still provide a free drop-off area away from the terminal. It usually means a shuttle, a walk, or both, so build in extra time rather than treating it as a last-minute option.
Do not stop on approach roads
Red routes, no-stopping areas and camera enforcement can turn a quick roadside stop into a much more expensive mistake. Follow the signed car park or drop-off route.
Pay before the deadline
At barrier-free airports the payment deadline is often midnight the following day. Set a reminder before you leave the airport road network.
Key Airport Practical Notes
Heathrow
Pay the £7 terminal charge only when speed matters. With time in hand, Heathrow Park & Ride is the better value because it keeps the terminal forecourt out of the equation.
Gatwick
Gatwick is now a £10 decision. Use the paid forecourt for a fast unload only. The Long Stay free period is the better choice when the passenger can manage the shuttle.
Stansted
The £28 charge after 15 minutes makes Stansted unforgiving. With any chance of delay, choose Mid Stay rather than relying on the Express Set Down.
Manchester
Manchester now charges £5.50 for five minutes and £6.50 for ten. The free shuttle area is the sensible default for families or anyone who needs more than a fast luggage unload.
Birmingham
Birmingham is the rare major airport where the standard Drop Off car park still gives a free 10-minute window. Avoid paying for Premium Set Down unless the closer position matters.
Bristol
Bristol is expensive for a short stop. The free Waiting Zone is worth using when the passenger can take the bus link and you are not under time pressure.
When drop-off isn’t enough
When you are helping someone check in, waiting for an arrival, or travelling with family luggage, short-stay or pre-booked airport parking is usually the better call than gambling on a drop-off lane and risking an overstay charge.
Compare Airport Parking OptionsBefore You Drive to the Terminal
Check the terminal
Driving to the wrong terminal can trigger a second charge at airports using ANPR. Confirm the airline and terminal before entering the airport road system.
Keep payment details ready
For barrier-free systems, take a quick note of the vehicle registration and payment deadline. This matters most at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and Manchester.
Allow time for free shuttles
Free areas often save money but cost time. The trade-off is usually worth it for planned drop-offs, but not for a late-running passenger.
Airport Drop-Off Charge FAQs
How much is the average UK airport drop-off fee in 2026?
The average nearest-terminal drop-off fee at the UK’s 20 busiest airports was £7 in the RAC’s July 2026 comparison. The RAC found that the average had risen by £1.70, or about one third, compared with summer 2025.
How many UK airports increased their drop-off fees this year?
Sixteen of the UK’s 20 busiest airports increased or introduced their nearest-terminal drop-off fee in the year to July 2026. Liverpool John Lennon, East Midlands, Belfast City and Southampton were the four airports in the RAC comparison that did not increase their initial charge.
Which UK airport has the highest drop-off charge?
Gatwick and Stansted have the joint-highest initial charge at £10. Gatwick allows 10 minutes, while Stansted allows 15 minutes before its charge jumps to £28.
Which airport drop-off is most expensive per minute?
London City is the most expensive on the initial per-minute measure used by the RAC. Its £8 charge covers only five minutes, equivalent to £1.60 per minute.
Can I drop someone at Heathrow for free?
Yes, but not at the terminal forecourt. Heathrow Park & Ride car parks allow 29 minutes free, and passengers can take a free transfer bus to the terminal. The terminal drop-off charge is £7 for every entry.
Is Birmingham Airport drop-off free?
Birmingham’s standard Drop Off car park gives 10 minutes free and is about a 5 to 10-minute walk from the terminal. The closer Premium Set Down area costs £7 for 15 minutes, which is the price used in the RAC nearest-terminal comparison.
What happens if I forget to pay an airport drop-off charge?
The airport or parking operator may issue a parking charge notice, commonly up to £100. At barrier-free Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted and Luton, check the signs and pay online or by phone by the published deadline, usually midnight the following day.
Can I pay an airport drop-off charge at the barrier?
It depends on the airport. Some areas take payment at an exit barrier or machine, while the busiest barrier-free zones require online or telephone payment after the visit. Check the payment method before driving into the chargeable zone.
Are Blue Badge holders exempt from airport drop-off charges?
Usually not, and Luton is a clear example of why you should check. Blue Badge holders get no concession in Luton’s main Drop Off and Pick Up Zone, but they can get 30 minutes free in Terminal Car Park 1, plus reduced rates for longer stays, after showing a Blue Badge or proof of booked assistance. The concession often sits in a named car park rather than the drop-off lane, so check the airport’s official accessibility page before travel.
Should I use airport drop-off or short-stay parking?
Use drop-off only when the passenger can leave the car immediately. Use short-stay parking when you need to help at check-in, wait for an arrival, manage family luggage or support someone who needs assistance.
Which major UK airports still have a free drop-off option?
Many major airports retain a free alternative away from the closest forecourt. Examples include Heathrow Park & Ride, Gatwick Long Stay, Stansted Mid Stay, Luton Long Stay, Manchester’s free drop-off area, Birmingham’s standard Drop Off car park and the waiting zones at Bristol and Newcastle.
Why have airport drop-off charges increased?
Airports commonly cite congestion management, limited forecourt space, local air quality and climate targets. The RAC argues that drivers are a captive audience and notes that none of the ten busiest airports in the European Union charges for terminal drop-off.
Can I appeal an airport drop-off parking charge notice?
Yes. Follow the appeal instructions and deadline printed on the notice, and provide relevant evidence such as a payment receipt or proof of a system error. Do not ignore the notice or assume that airport land automatically makes it invalid.
Are airport drop-off charges higher at peak times?
The published initial fee is normally fixed rather than demand-priced. The risk at busy times is that a queue or slow unload pushes the vehicle beyond the included period and into a higher tariff band.
What is ANPR at airports?
ANPR means Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Cameras record the vehicle registration on entry and exit so the airport can calculate the visit length and identify unpaid charges without using barriers.
Can I stop on an airport approach road to avoid the fee?
No. Airport approach roads commonly have red routes, no-stopping restrictions and camera enforcement. Use a signed drop-off zone, short-stay car park or the airport’s official free alternative.
